Reflection, the key to right action and learning
From Mercuri Mail archives – Editorial in Dec 1999 Issue on role of Reflection in fostering learning and developing the core
How does one attain a certain level of understanding to say that, "I think I have learnt it reasonably well".
Is it purely the amount of "knowledge" one has?
Is it the amount of information one has? Is it the breadth of subjects one knows?
Does it begin with "seeking" or end with "seeking"?
"Seeking", is the first step… is one of the key aspects of development of the core..
To try and know
To try and understand
To try and understand the horizon
To try and add value to one's own self
To try and improve the depth of "knowledge"
The key to all this is "try", because when we seek, we try and it is the only first step in the process.
The real understanding and learning comes out of reflection".
What does "reflection", perhaps, include?
A step to think in solitude and analyse what one seems to know
An ability and attitude to ask questions to oneself and seek further
A way of sorting out information and trying to find out a pattern which is not apparent
A thought process to question one's own understanding and study own behaviour in the context of what one sought.
If we persist in this process what we seek gets enhanced. What we seek gets more interesting and at times more intimidating. It also generates new questions for one to answer, not for others, but for himself or herself. Thus begins the process of reflection.
Needless to say it is continuous.
